Friday 29th September next will be a momentous day in the history of our school as Ms. Monnelly will retire after 40 years teaching the children of Mullagh and the wider community. Ms. Monnelly commenced her teaching career in 1977 in the old school on the Virginia Road. She moved to the ‘new school’ beside St. Kilian’s Church in 1980 where she taught for 36 years until finally moving to our present school in November 2016. During her time she has, as Deputy Principal helped to manage and guide our school as we evolved from a small rural setting to the modern, vibrant school we have today, with 370 pupils and 24 teachers. Ms. Monnelly’s passion for teaching and learning, and above all her sensitivity for those who needed help permeated everything she did. She was always innovative and had a steadfast commitment to setting the highest standards for her pupils and colleagues alike. Ms. Monnelly has witnessed huge change in the field of education over her 40 years. She not only embraced this change but was very often driving and shaping it, particularly in the fields of infant and special education. Her unstinting support, her sage advice and wicked sense of humour will be missed by all in our school community and in particular by those who needed her most. We wish her well in her retirement from the teaching profession as she embarks on a new chapter in her life.
Ms. Monnelly will be replaced as support teacher by Ms. Louise Smith, presently teaching Senior Infants. Ms Smith in turn will be replaced by Ms. Laura Doyle who will be taking up a permanent teaching position on Monday 2nd October.
Our girls football team played St. Mary’s N.S. Virginia in the Cumann na mBunscol, Division 1 final on Saturday 10th June in Breffni Park. We built up a 5 point lead early in the second half. However with the aid of a very strong breeze the Virginia girls clawed their way back and a very late goal helped them to a 4 point win. Our girls represented the school very well and we are very proud of them. Well done.
Our school was officially opened on Friday 19th May by Bishop Leo O Reilly. All the children took part in a special opening ceremony called Trasnán. The children presented symbols representing the best and most important elements of our old school and placed them in St. Kilian’s boat, ready for the journey across to the new school.
Spraoi celebrated Autism Awareness Day on Friday 31st March. Children in the school wore blue for mufti-day and each child was given a special badge to mark the day. Children in Spraoi released blue balloons into the air and they went on a special trip to Little Monkeys in Virginia. Thank you to Noel Donoghue who kindly sponsored the bus for them.
Run for Funds 2017 will take place on Friday 16th June. This year we hope to raise €4,000 to provide more resources for our yards, yard games, benches, picnic tables, bug hotels, netting, developing pathways etc… Our Student Council (Comhairle Scoile) have circulated suggestion boxes to the pupils on how the money should be spent. They will draw up a list and prioritize the best ideas. Run for Funds promises to be a great day once again this year.
All the children in 6th Class are taking part in the Primary School Ensemble in association with the Royal Irish Academy of Music. They will get the opportunity to play in the National Concert Hall in Earlsfort Terrace, Dublin on Thursday 27th April. The concert will commence at 12.30pm following a rehearsal on the same day at 10.30am. Our school will play Skye Boat Song, The Hills and sing Amazing Grace. The children will leave school at 8am and should bring a packed lunch and wear their full uniform as they will be representing the school. Each child is required to pay €10 to cover costs, payable to the teacher. Tickets for families are available free of charge. Please let your child’s teacher know how many tickets you need. We expect to be back in Mullagh at 4.30pm in time for the Confirmation rehearsal that night.
